Startup troubleshooting

God of War 3 PC Port Not Launching: Troubleshooting Guide

Start with the failure stage and the log. A black screen, an empty file and a memory-allocation error need different checks.

Identify the error and project version

First decide what failed: the launcher, preparation after pressing PLAY, the initial game window, or gameplay after a scene has loaded. “It doesn’t work” combines several different investigations.

Record these before changing anything:

  • Project package version, operating system and GPU driver.
  • CPU and GPU model, including both adapters on a hybrid laptop.
  • Game title ID, game version and whether a separate update folder is selected.
  • The exact error and the last part of the log.

Open Advanced → Log in the launcher. On a default Windows installation, the log is user\last_run.log under the program folder; a custom Saves folder changes the location. The Linux data directory is described in the Deck/Linux guide.

Match the symptom to a useful check

Symptom First useful check Read next
Preparation fails before a game window Named missing/empty file; game and update paths File preparation
Black window or immediate exit Exact log, selected GPU, project version Black screen checks
A missing CPU instruction is reported CPU feature requirement and version CPU errors
guest memory / error 1450 Windows virtual-memory allocation Memory checks
Gameplay starts but surfaces look wrong Project version and render resolution Texture issues

Black screen or immediate exit

Release 2.3.0 includes a fix for a Vulkan layer hiding the NVIDIA GPU on some AMD/NVIDIA laptops. Update from the project release page, then inspect which adapter the launcher sees. That fix is relevant to that configuration; it is not a universal explanation for all black screens.

Issue #243 consolidates more than one startup report. Similar-looking windows are not proof that those systems have the same root cause. Compare the log rather than copying the last reply’s settings.

The release notes also identify an Overwolf overlay hook as a startup-crash cause in a specific report. If your log names that hook and Overwolf is running, close it and retry. Do not disable unrelated services indiscriminately.

File preparation and CPU errors

Preparation errors

Issue #93 includes incomplete-file reports and newer launcher diagnostics. If the program names an empty eboot.bin or module, inspect the selected directories and recopy the affected files from your own complete source. A different resolution cannot repair a zero-byte executable.

Some reported extracted layouts placed metadata in Sc0 rather than sce_sys. Use the launcher’s current validation and read the report’s follow-up before rearranging files manually. The installation guide explains the two folder selectors.

CPU compatibility errors

Check the actual STOP or instruction message against CPU requirements. A historical comment about an older release may predate instruction-rewrite support. Preserve the log if the current package still rejects your CPU.

Guest memory error 1450

The project associates this message with Windows being unable to provide the requested virtual-memory allocation. It is different from a missing-file error and different from a Vulkan device-memory error.

Check free disk space, the Windows page-file configuration and the more specific launcher explanation. Release 2.3.0 adds a clearer message for this case. The project’s troubleshooting section documents a page-file adjustment procedure; read it in full before changing a system setting. Restart if Windows asks, then retain the new log for comparison.

A larger page file does not turn an unsupported GPU into a supported one or guarantee that a separate crash is resolved.

Unresolved bugs and how to report them

The 2.3.0 notes still list a full-1.02-update crash with code=0xa0020014 and a separate 0xC0000005 startup failure. If your log matches an open report, add your evidence there rather than presenting an unconfirmed workaround as a fix.

For a new upstream issue, include the version, hardware, error text, log and steps. Remove personal paths or other private details before posting. Do not upload commercial game files. Change one variable at a time, and state whether the result is repeatable.
